Hi there,

I'm coming to Japan with my wife for 10 days in the end of may. Our current plan is as follows:
1 day - arriving to Narita Airport + exploring Tokyo
2 - exploring Tokyo
3 - trip to Nikko
4 - exploring Tokyo + train to Hakone
5 - exploring Hakone + train to Kyoto
6 - exploring Kyoto
7 - exploring Kyooto
8 - trip to Nara
9 - train to Hiroshima via Himeji + exploring Hiroshima and Miyajima
10 - exploring Hiroshima / Miyajima and train back to Narita Airport overnight near airport
11- back home at 10:00 AM

I have some questions:
1. Does it look reasonable or should I change something?
2. Is it better to buy 14 or 7 days JR PASS and activate it on day 4 with trip to Hakone? We'll need to travel from the airport to Tokyo and to Nikko. How do you count time on JR PASS from activation till it expires?
3. We think of Hakone just to see Mt Fuji and spend some time in Onsen but maybe there's better (in fact simplier) way to do that?
4. Should I plan to stay in Miyajima or Hiroshima on day 9? It looks we have to visit a lot on this particular day
5. What's the best option to reach Narita Airport form Hiroshima on 4.06? We just need to reach the hotel near the airport so we can reach it late in the evening - I prefer to spend some more time in Hiroshima instead of sitting at the airport

Hi there,

1.) Looks good to me :D Its good that you return 1 day in advance to Narita Airport, so you are sure to get on your flight.

2.) Both a 7 and 14 day JR Pass would help you make savings. The JR Pass is counted in full days and the 1st day is counted as a full day, no matter what time you start using it. There are some budget options available to travel from Tokyo to Nikko, taking 1 of these + a 7 day JR Pass would likely be the most economic option. While a 14 day JR Pass would give you more convenience and flexibility.

3.) I think Hakone is the best choice here. As it also has easy access on to Kyoto. The alternative would be a visit to Fuji Five lakes but transport would be much more difficult. Also Hakone has a lot of other amazing things to do, other than watching Fuji. Such as going up to Mt. Hakone itself.

4.) I would stay near Hiroshima station and explore Miyajima and Hiroshima from there. It is just so much more convenient than taking your luggage everywhere.

5.) Take the Sakura Shinkansen from Hiroshima to Shin-Osaka, at Shin-osaka transfer to a Hikari Shinkansen to Tokyo and finally use the Narita Express to Narita Airport. It is quite a long trip so you still will want to start on it around lunch time or shortly after.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
