Hi, I am going to Japan in November and below is my tentative itinerary. Initially my plan is without Hokkaido, after add in Hokkaido I am not sure the plan is still workable not or too rush in time, please feel free to give your opinion.

Day 1: Reach Kansai airport at 4pm (stay Osaka) Visit Dotonbori, Sinsaibashi
Day 2: morning few hours tour ard Osaka town then proceed to kyoto (stay kyoto)
Day 3: kyoto (stay kyoto)
Day 4: kyoto - Hiroshima - Miyamaji (stay kyoto)
Day 5: Morning train to Takayama - Shirawago (stay takayama)
Day 6: Morning train to Mt Fuji (stay at hakone)
Day 7: Tokyo (stay tokyo) visit shinjuku or ueno
Day 8: Morning train to Hokkaido (stay sapporo)
Day 9: Hokkaido
Day 10: Hokkaido
Day 11: Hokkaido to Tokyo (by flight)
Day 12: Tokyo
Day 13: Tokyo
Day 14: Tokyo (night flight 11.55pm back home)

Here are my questions:
1. Is my itinerary too pack? Is few hours enough for Osaka? (I only spent few hours on Day 1 and Day 2)
2. For Kyoto - is it enough time to visit all those famous temple, gion area and arashiyama? shd I add in one more day for kyoto?
3. I should take 7 day pass which start use on Day 4 and end on Day 10 therefore I need to fly back from hokkaido to tokyo or shall I take 14 days pass?
4. should I take out Hokkaido from my itinerary? or cut one day off in Tokyo so that I can spent more time in other places?
5. please feel free to amend my itinerary.

Many thanks,
Alicia

Hi Alicia,

1.) Although it needs a a couple of changes - the itinerary is a very nice one. Sure, there's a lot of train travel but it is certainly possible. Time in Osaka is also not that much but this is a bit of a trade-off you may have to make.

2.) Kyoto has enough temples to keep you busy for a month! I'd recommend making a selection of the temples you really wish to see and stick too that. Otherwise you may run the risk of falling to ''Temple Tiredness''. It may sound strange at first but it happens quickly after realizing there is one temple on every street block.

3.) I think the 7 day JR Pass is great, especially since you fly out of Hokkaido. However if you would travel back by rail, then the 14 day JR Pass would be great too!

4.) This is a hard question and one I can't answer directly. Time spend in Tokyo/Kyoto/Hokkaido is time spend well. It depends on you what you wish to see the most. The train trip from Tokyo - Sapporo is one I really enjoy myself but could be too much for others.

5.) One thing I would change is travel to Shirakawago, coming from Hiroshima, this would just be too much travel time on a single day to see anything. This could be a good change to see a bit more of Kyoto/Osaka or Hokkaido.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
