Hi Daniel,

My itinerary is 14 days as followed:

  1. Arriving in Tokyo at 4PM and take bullet train to Kyoto on the same day.
  2. Stay in Kyoto for 4 nights with day visits to

    • Kyoto: 2 days
    • Osaka: 1 day
    • Nara: 1 day

On day 4 after Nara, go to Nagoya in the evening.

  3. Stay at Nagoya for 3 nights with day visit to

    • Nagoya: 1 day
    • Takayama: 1 day
    • Nagoya to Hamamatsu Flower Park

On day 3 after Hamamatsu Flower Park, go to Hakone in the evening.

  4. Stay at Hakone for 2 nights with day trips to

    • Hakone: 1 day
    • Mount Fuji: 1 day (day trip and take bullet train to Tokyo in evening)

On day 2 after Mount Fuji, go to Tokyo

  5. Stay at Tokyo: 3 nights

Based on this itinerary, it looks like I need the 14-day pass for bullet trains. Is there a less expensive transport combination ?

What are the latest departure times for the bullet trains
- from Kyoto to Nagoya ? - from Nagoya to Hakone ? - from Nagoya to Tokyo ?

Also, for the transfer from Tokyo airport to the bullet train, what is the easiest station for this transfer ? Do I need to buy a separate ticket from Tokyo airport to the bullet train's station ?

For sightseeing at Kyoto, is it better to use bus or local train ? What are their schedules ?

If you have any other tips about this itinerary, feel free to let me know.

Thanks.

Hi Michael,

The cost of rail tickets for your itinerary is more than a 7 day JR Pass but less than a 14 day JR Pass. That said, a 7 day JR Pass would not be long enough for your trip. That said, your sort of in the middle and the best option right now is to just buy the rail tickets as you go.

For travel times, I recommend learning to plan with Hyperdia this way you can find any route/timetable and more. It's a great tool for planning with the JR Pass. We also have a useful interactive map with all JR lines included. You can also find the latest trains this way.

For travel from Narita to Kyoto, take the Narita Express to Tokyo station, you can hop on the Shinkansen there right away.

In Kyoto, I would take a local bus or bicycle. You can buy a 500yen bus ticket at the driver. There are so many bus routes in Kyoto that I can't list them here but they generally run from 6am to late in the evening and stop around midnight.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
