Hi Erica,

I would recommend using a Takayama-Hokuriku Area Pass for your travel. It would cover all travel on this route, including the bus to Shirakawago.

Hope this helps :)

Hi, thanks for your reply.
I have gone through the routes of your recommendations however I find
that it may not be suitable.
My itinerary :
Straight from Kansai Airport I will travel to Kyoto (2 nights) - Takayama (2nights) - Kanazawa (1 night) and Osaka (2nights).
I find that there is no train to Nagoya from Kyoto .. for my onwards journey to Takayama.
Please advise ..thanks
Erica

Hi Erica,

This is correct, you would not travel via Nagoya but take the Thunderbird train up to Kanazawa and from there by train to Takayama. If you travel like this, then it will fit your entire route.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Hi Daniel, what type of JR pass should I buy for my above itinerary?
Can I use the JR pass in Kyoto ie taking the trains and bus for sightseeing?
Seems that the Kyoto Hop On and Hop off bus is only available during weekends.
Thanks
Erica

Hi Erica,

I still think the Takayama-Hokuriku Area Pass is the best option if you can travel the route to Takayama via Kanazawa.

A JR Pass is best considered for travel between cities, as intercity routes are often expensive without the pass. Local travel within a city is a different story and the best transport will often depend on what your route is (from point A - B). You can use local JR lines within cities but may also have to use other transport, like local buses, the metro or even a taxi. These other transport methods are often not included in the JR Pass and local for a local day pass or just normal tickets is better. In Kyoto for instance, the city bus is not covered by the JR Pass but you can buy a day ticket for only 500yen from the bus driver, which you can use to travel nearly anywhere in Kyoto by bus.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel
Regarding the Takayama- Hokuriku Pass do I have to pay for reserved seats?
How long will the whole journey takes from Kyoto-Takayama via Kanazawa using this route.
I cannot reschedule my routes as all hotels has be booked and paid.
For this pass can it be used for Shinkansen line?
Thanks
Erica
