We are traveling to Tokyo on April 11th and arrive in the evening. My question is what JR pass do I need?
We go into Tokyo from Narita airport that night. Stay two days in Tokyo. Then to to Nara on the 13th for two nights. Then to Kyoto on the 15th for 3 nights and then on the 18th back to Narita airport.
Please advise me what is the best pass to purchase for two adults. Thanks. Rebecca
Hello Rebecca,
A 7 day JR Pass would work very well for your itinerary. I'd recommend using it from April 12th - April 18th. This what you can cover all your - otherwise expensive - train travel and make good savings over normal tickets.
For your day of arrival, either buy normal tickets for travel into Tokyo or you could look at a discount package such as offered by Keisei Skyliner.
Hope this helps,
Daniel
Thanks very much. You have turned a complicated situation into an easy one. Thanks for that.
a few more questions: Do we have to reserve seats on the Tokyo to Kyoto train? and from Tokyo to Narita airport? Is the best way to purchase the JR pass is on line at the JR website or with a travel agent? Is the price the same?
Hi again!
Seat reservations are not required for Tokyo - Kyoto but I would recommend making them. This just gives you that extra peace of mind, knowing that you are secured of seating.
The Narita Express is one of the few trains that needs a reserved seat, you can book a ticket up to 5 minutes before departure.
The price of the JR Pass is based on the same yen amount, some agencies do charge extra booking costs. We keep a very accurate exchange rate and don't charge anything extra. Additionally shipping is free to many countries.
Hi again Daniel-san,
If I buy the JR pass a week before we leave, on the 4/5 of April, will the passes be available still? Also, do you immediately send me a voucher to my email for the pass? Thanks very much again. Rebecca
Hi Rebecca,
We have to send the voucher by real mail to you, this can take a couple of days, depending on where you live. It is not possible to do so by e-mail. Ordering a week beforehand should be okay but it's better to do so as soon as possible.
Hope this helps,
Daniel
