Hi,
I am travelling to Japan with my husband and 3 year old kid. Following is the itinerary:
-Arriving in Haneda airport on 19 April > Stay in Tokyo for 5 nights. -Go to Hakone. Arriving in Hakone on 24 April > Stay in Hakone for 1 night -Go to Kyoto. Arriving in Kyoto on 25 April > Stay in Kyoto for 5 nights. -Leave from Kyoto on 30 April morning to catch flight from Narita airport. Flight departs at 6:00 pm. Can you please guide me:
1. which JR pass will be the best suitable for above?
2. For which routes can we take the bullet train?
3. Which trains do we need to reserve a ticket first? And which trains we can just travel on the day itself?

Many thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hi there,

1.) I would use a 7-day JR Pass for travel from Tokyo - Hakone - Kyoto - back to Narita Airport. These are the routes that cost the most without a JR Pass and where you can make savings.

2.) You can use the Shinkansen on all these routes. The Shinkansen station for Hakone is called Odawara. To Narita you take the Shinkansen bullet train back to Tokyo station, then the Narita Express to Narita Airport.

3.) You can reserve all these on the day of travel. Though doing so 1-2 days in advance is better to be secure of seating.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
