Hello!

Three of us will be traveling in Japan from 1/30 to 2/12. We will be flying in to Tokyo, taking the train into the city to stay for 24 hours, and then traveling to Chitose where we will rent a car for travel on Hokkaido. On 2/11, we will return via train to Tokyo before our flight on 2/12.

Two questions:
1) Would the best rail pass to get be the 14-day?
2) Will we have any trouble traveling on the train with our luggage? This would include:
- Three pairs of skis (one pair of skis per person) - Three large duffel bags (one duffel per person) - Three backpacks (one backpack per person)

Please let me know. Thanks for your help!

Hi there,

1.) The JR Pass is a very cost effecient option for going to Hokkaido. You could either look at a 14 day JR Pass or use a JR East - South Hokkaido Rail Pass. The latter costs less but does not have 1st class options like the JR Pass.

2.) You are generally allowed up to 2 Suitcases per person on the train. A more general rule is, you can bring what you like, as long as it does not inconvenience other riders.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
