JR Rail Pass: 14 or 21 Days?

We are staying in Japan for 20 days with an itinerary of:
Tokyo (5 nights)
Kyoto (6 nights)
Koya-San (2 nights)
Hiroshima (2 nights)
Naoshima (2 nights)
Tokyo (3 nights)

Our question is whether we should go for 14 day or 21 day Japan Rail Pass given we are in Tokyo for 8 nights at the beginning/end of the trip?

We are thinking, possibly, to go for a 21 day pass as are able to use the JR Pass on certain lines in Tokyo and are hoping for a couple of day trips from Tokyo (to Mt Fuji and Kamokura) while we are there.

Any advice would be really appreciated. We fly to Tokyo on 31 March.

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul,

I think a 14 day JR Pass will work fine, supplemented with local tickets or passes in Tokyo. Local travel within Tokyo does not cost that much. Kamakura and Fuji don't cost that much either but if you were to make a trip to say Nikko, or Hakone, then a 21 day JR Pass may be worth it.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
