Hello,

I am doing an 11 day trip in Japan, the first 4 days in Tokyo, then in Kyoto for 4 days, then maybe Koyasan for 1 night then returning to Tokyo. We may aso add a day in Hakone but are unsure.

  1. Is it better to get the 7 day pass a few days into the trip, or what is the best value for money?
  2. How often do the trains run from Tokyo to Kyoto?
  3. How early in advance do I have to order the tickets to get them sent to my UK address? I heard that there was a way I could get cheaper tickets if they are ordered enough in advance and sent to my home address in the UK?

Many thanks!

Hi there,

1.) Think about it this way, the 7-day JR Pass is similar in price as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto using the Shinkansen. Any additional travel you can cover with it, is basically your total in savings.

2.) At least every 30 minutes, with trains every 10 minutes at peak times.

3.) Online purchase of the JR Pass is up to 20% cheaper than buying the Rail Pass in Japan.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
