Yes, that is what I would do as well. For the return to Kansai Airport, you can also use the JR Special Rapid to KIX. It is considered a local train and about half the price of the Haruka. Comfort is a bit less but travel time about the same.

I am just worry about the unreserved seats on JR limited express trains. Any advice on this concern? Come a bit early to the station, this way you can queue up for a non-reserved seat at the station platform.

Tennoji is within the Osaka city limit bounds and not very far, you could take any train going there and the time difference would be minimal.
