We arrived 17.12 into Tokyo and stay there until 21.12
Whilst there we need to use the transit system and intend to sightsee each day (Nikko, Kamakura etc)

22.12 We travel to Hakone for 2 Nights

24.12 We travel from Hakone to Kyoto

30.12 We go back to Tokyo for one night to catch the plane home the next day.

We were going to book a LOT of diffent hotels and do a circular route but it seems its all easily accessible by train each day from the central points booked?

I'd be really grateful if someone could advise?

Thanks

Hello there,

It's indeed a very easy route to travel, since distances are not too long and there are trains everywhere.

Looking at a pass to use, I would recommend using a 7 day JR Pass. The 7 day JR Pass, is about the same price as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto on the Shinkansen, so any additional travel you do with it is basically free! It's especially a good deal if you could plan in Nikko in to it's validity period, as Nikko can be rather expansive when travelling on the JR. This would mean changing your itinerary a little though.

Both Hakone, Nikko and Kamakura work well as day trips from Tokyo. Although it's very nice to stay a night in Hakone. I would also recommend staying in Kyoto.

Hope this helps!
Daniel.

Thanks Daniel
As we're in Japan for more than 7 days, how does the 7 day pass work please as i feel we'll need it every day (eg from the airport, day trips out of Tokyo, from Tokya to Hakone, from Hakone to Kyoto, day trips out of Kyoto, return from Kyoto to Tokyo and frmo Tokyo to airport)? We are in Japan for 16 days?

Itinerary more easily explained

arrived 17.12 into Tokyo 4 nights
Whilst there we need to use the transit system and intend to sightsee each day (Nikko, Kamakura etc)

22.12 We travel to Hakone for 2 Nights

24.12 We travel from Hakone to Kyoto for 6 nights
Whilst there we need to use the transit system and intend to sightsee each day

30.12 We go back to Tokyo for one night

catch the plane home the next day.

Thanks again

Peter

Hi Peter!

When deciding on a JR Pass the first thing to look at is if it would be better in terms of price compared to normal ticket ticket prices. What I was trying to say in my last post, was that it could be worth it with a little planning. However with the itinerary you've got now. it would actually be better to just buy normal ticket as you travel instead of a JR Pass.Currently, the 7 day JR Pass would not help you much as you're travel is spread out over a period more than 7 days. At the same time there's not enough in terms of ticket prices for a 14 day JR Pass to pay of either, so for now my advise would be to just buy normal tickets as you travel.

I know it can sound somewhat confusing but I hope it makes sense this way.
Daniel
