hi, hope someone can help me. so happy that we are soon to be on our first trip to Japan. This is my itinerary.

Day 1 .. arrive Haneda 9.25pm. overnight stay in Tokyo
Day 2 .. Tokyo to Kyoto
Day 3 .. Kyoto sight seeing (shrines, temples)
Day 4 .. Kyoto to Osaka
Day 5 .. USJ
Day 6 .. Osaka sight seeing
Day 7 -- Osaka to Tokyo
Day 8 - Day 13 .. Tokyo
Day 14 .. depart Haneda

We are a family of 8 (all adults) ... Please advise which pass would best suit us?

  1. Would the 7 day pass be good enough, activating on day 2.

  2. The kids want to experience the bullet train, so its the hikari? and that is included in the pass? ( sorry my knowledge of the trains are limited).

  3. Can we reserve seats in the ordinary class when we buy the pass? because we want to sit together.

  4. We will have a luggage each (8 in total) we booked accomm thru airbnb, so we cant send our luggage first. Will they be ok if we put in front of us on the seat?

  5. Our travel date is not till 30 January 2017. How far in advance can we buy the pass?

Our overnight stay in Day 1 is near Shinagawa Station. So we'll be leaving from that station.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi there,

1.) Yes, you could cover all (otherwise) expensive trips. Then just buy local tickets for travel around Tokyo.

2.) The Shinkansen are the high-speed railways on which the bullet trains travel. One of these bullet trains is the Hikari and this is included in the JR Pass.

3.) Yes, just be sure to make seat reservations.

4.) Here are the official guidelines for luggage on the train in Japan. You may bring up to two pieces of baggage on board free of charge. For each bag the total of the length, width and height must not exceed 250 centimeters, the length must not exceed two meters and the weight must be no more than 30 kilograms.

5.) Any JR Pass has to be activated within 90 days after purchase. You could buy them now for January or wait a little.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your reply. It does help a lot.

Can I please ask. We will be taking the shinkansen from Shinagawa Station.

  1. Is there an exchange place at Shinagawa Station to exchange our vouchers to the JR Pass?

  2. We activate the pass on the day we are going to Kyoto. On the same day, can we reserve all our seats on the shinkansen from Kyoto to Osaka and Osaka to Tokyo?

Its our first trip so I want to gather as much info as possible and plan ahead. Thank you once again.

Hi there,

1.) Yes, you can exchange the JR Pass directly at Shinagawa station.

2.) Also yes here, you can make all reservations you want, once you have exchanged the JR Pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
