Which JR pass should I get?

I'm going to Japan with my family (4 people in total) and I'm confused whether I should get a JR pass or buy normal tickets. Our itinerary looks like this:

August
1 tokyo - Narita Airport
2 tokyo
3 hakone
4 osaka
5 osaka
6 osaka
7 tokyo
8 tokyo - Narita Airport

Is it worth it to get a JR pass? I realise that variations of the same route have already been covered in other posts, but I would really appreciate your help. Thanks!

Hi there,

yes, the JR Pass covers this route and you can make nice savings with the Japan Rail Pass. Since you'll be traveling 8 days, this would mean that you have to buy normal tickets for one day. Either day 1 or day 8. Given that Narita Airport can be busy to exchange the JR Pass, I would recommend buying a normal ticket on day way and use the JR Pass from Day 2 - 8.

Also, since you've got a lot of days in Osaka. Consider making a day trip to Kyoto, Nara, or Kobe. They are all within 1 hour travel from Osaka and you can really get the most out of your trip and the JR Pass this way.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
