I am travelling to Japan in late July for a 10 day holiday. We are planning on travelling on arrival by train from narita to echigo yuzawa. We plan on staying for four nights in yuzawa before travelling to Niigata, where we will stay for two nights before returning to Tokyo for 3 nights then back to Narita airport to fly home.
I was thinking that a JR east pass might be best. Can you recommend if this is the best option?
Also we are concerned that it may be difficult to get a train on arrival from Narita to echigo yuzawa, given the Fuji rock festival is on and it may be a popular travel route. Is it possible to book seats before arrival?

Hi there,
Your route is pretty straight forward and using a JR East Pass for Niigata is waht I would recommend here as well.
You can reserve some JR East trains via: this website. Read the website carefully as there are some limitations.
Hope this helps,
Daniel
