Visiting Japan for 10 days (the first and last 2 days visiting Osaka and the rest visiting Tokyo (between Osaka and Tokyo by JR)

Hello,

I am travelling with 2 kids to Japan in August and would like to know how to save the time and spending.
Please help me determine what kind of tickets I should buy? e.g. purchase a JR pass or purchase tickets separately

Day 1-3: Arrive Osaka at 3pm and travel to Osaka swissotel nanbo
Day 3-8: From Osaka to Tokyo to Shinjuku Keio plaza hotel
Day 8-10:Back to Osaka and stay in Osako Swissotel nanbo

Thank you so much : )

Hi,

With just a few more small trips beyond Osaka-Tokyo-Osaka, you can make a 7 day pass pay off easily. With your schedule, it precludes using the train to/from Kansai Int'l Airport, but there is a 1000 yen bus anyway. Six days is more than enough to see Tokyo (three really is about enough for the city), so some nice day trips would certainly making getting the pass a great deal and expand your itinerary nicely. Nikko makes an excellent day trip, and your 2 kids would probably like Edo Wonderland very much (an old times theme park). Seeing Karuizawa for a day is also a great way to escape the horrendously humid and muggy August weather. Hakone also makes a nice and varied day trip. Look into getting a Hakone Free Pass.

If you are already going to see Tokyo though, seeing Osaka in rather redundant. Places like Dotonbori (next to Namba Stn.), and the Umeda Sky Bldg at night are a blast, but otherwise, in the daytime don't miss Kyoto and Nara.
Your kids would probably love running through the Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto, and the Todaiji Great Buddha in Nara is a must see place.

Best of luck.

Hello, thank you so much for your assistant and I would like to ask some more question. When we travel from Osaka to Tokyo by JR, is there any class of ticket which is not suitable for JR Pass? Or we need to paid for ? And what is the name of the railway?

Hi,
For your itinerary, the only real things you need to remember is that with the pass you cannot ride the fastest train, the Nozomi, and you can't sit in the green seat cars, unless you've paid more and your pass is issued for that. You're spending a good amount of time in each area you're going to, so if you feel like you can certainly branch out more and see a lot more places.

Good luck.

Also please remember that there is half country south of you that you are not seeing.
In addition, there are other numerous great places you can visit in the area. Okayama is not far and it is famous for its castle, plus Korakuen, one of Japan's Top 3, and also the Handayama Garden. If you'd like to get off the beaten trail for a while, the half day hike up to Konpirasan in Kotohira is breathtaking. Going to Takamatsu is also good - it has one of Japan's best gardens also, named Ritsurin.
Hiroshima also has a number of good places. Miyajima is the most famous, and aside from Hiroshima itself, Onomichi with its temple tour and Kosanji Temple is spectacular. Just beyond Miyajima also lies Iwakuni with its historical bridge and mountaintop castle. Taikodani is also a superb shrine in Tsuwano, Shimane. Hagi Castle was actually delightful, and the preserved samurai district and Mori related temples a rarity. One of the very best is the Akiyoshi Limestone Cave, a 300 million year old marvel with massive open caverns and an underground river running through it.

If you can, try to find a little time to see the Japanese themselves. Go visit a Japanese supermarket and see what people typically eat. Look through a park and watch the Japanese kids play. Learn about the history of some of the places you visit before your departure - it will give your trip so much more meaning.

In total, there is certainly a lot more to explore and enjoy.
