Hi

I am planning to visit Japan from the 4th of Aug to 16th Aug. Will arrive on the 4th and be taking a domestic flight to New Chitose Airport from Nagoya on the 5th of August at 3 pm. I will like to take a train/ fast to Hakodate on the same day around 7 p,m.

Should I buy a 14 day Japan Rail Pass ? Would I be able to use this JR pass/ ticket in Hokkaido ( Hakodate / Furano / Otaru / Lake Toya / Noboribetsu ) and the overnight train from Sapporo to Osaka and finally from Osaka to Nagoya.

Please advise.

Thank You

Hello Laura,

The JR Pass could certainly help you make good savings, as it is valid for travel with Hokkaido (including Hakodate / Furano / Otaru / Lake Toya / Noboribetsu) and you can use it from travel from Hokkaido all the way down to Osaka if you wish.

What I would like to point out though, the JR Pass only covers the basic for for the night train between Sapporo - Osaka, additional fares such as an accommodation fare and limited express fee will have to be paid. An other problem with the night train is that it does not run every night and can be sold out days in advance. If you wish to travel to Osaka without having to pay extra, then I would advice traveling during the day by Shinkansen.

Hope this helps!

Hi Daniel

Thanks for the prompt response.

Would like to know what will be the train fares for the various sectors by Shinkansen,

1) Osaka to Kobe
2) Osaka to Kyoto
3) Kyoto to Nagoya.

With this new information I will be able to make a better decision if I should select a 14 days pass or just a 7 day pass.

Also what is the difference between a Hokkaido pass and a JR pass ? From my research the Hokkaido is cheaper than a JR pass.

Much Appreciated
Laura

Hi Laura,

Osaka - Kobe (¥ 410) and Osaka - Kyoto (¥ 410) are best travelled by local train as they can get you to a much more central place within both cities. Kyoto - Nagoya is ¥ 5,390.

As for the Hokkaido pass, as the name suggest, it's valid for travel within Hokkaido only whilst the JR Pass is valid for nation wide travel (including Hokkaido).

Hope this helps!
Daniel
