Hi there,

I have bought 7days JR Pass, and will visit Japan next week 20oct. Could I check with you:

  1. Using JR Pass, how long the journey from Tokyo to Kyoto (Kyoto station)?
Can I utilise all the journey using JR Pass?

  2. After Kyoto, I will visit Osaka & Mt Fuji (Kawaguchiko area) and back to Tokyo, can I know:

  3. Maximising my JR Pass, how to reach Kawaguchiko Station from Osaka (start from which station & end at which station?)
  4. How long roughly the trip will be, Osaka to Kawaguchiko station?

Thanks so much for your assistance

Best Regards

Hi there!

Here are some answers for you:

  1. Here's a sample itinerary from Tokyo to Kyoto 100% valid for the JR Pass. As you can see it takes 164mins on the Hikari bullet train.

  2. I recommend you visit Kawaguchiko from Tokyo as it is far closer than Osaka. For Kawaguchiko the JR Pass will take you as far as Otsuki station. From here you will need to use the non-JR Fujikyu lines up to Kawaguchiko itself. Here's a sample itinerary from Osaka to Kawaguchiko. You can see it will take 361mins from Osaka. From Tokyo the same trip will take 183m.

You can look up precise train timetables and costs at the Hyperdia travel planning website and learn how to use Hyperdia for JR Pass holders through our video blog.

Hope this helps!

Dear Mari

Thanks so much for your explanation, it's really helpful

My trip plan is Tokyo - Kyoto - Osaka - Mt Fuji (Kawaguchiko) - back to Tokyo

Can I ask you:

  1. From your suggestion, the train from Osaka to Mt Fuji will go to Yokohama first? I'm looking at Japan map, Yokohama is located further up near Tokyo.
Is there any other alternative way that is shorter? still using my JR Pass, I'm staying at this place:

3639-2 Funatsu, Kawaguchiko-machi
Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan 401-0301

According to hostel direction:
-From Osaka or Nagoya (Kansai Region) Take the JR Tokaido Shinkansen to Mishima Sta. From Mishima Sta, ride on a bus to Kawaguchiko Sta. (departs every hour / 120 min).
-You can use JR Pass for a bus from Gotemba Sta. rather than from Mishima Sta, and taking local trains from Mishima to Gotemba (transfer trains at Numazu Sta). From there, take a bus to Kawaguchiko Sta. (90 min)

Could you help me explain more detailed on above direction? thanks so much

  1. For 7days JR Pass (28300Y), is the seat fee already included in the price? (because I saw from hyperdia; the price are divided into: fare & seat fee)
Does it means we ll guarantee have a seat in the train, or we need to purchase the seat fee separately?

Thanks so much for your assistance

Regards,
Lucie

Hi there!

If your hostel has given you a guide, then I think that's going to be the best option! Here's the JR bus timetable from [Gotemba to Kawaguchiko]. You should make sure you call in advance, or visit a JR bus terminal in Japan (normally by JR stations) before you go to to make sure you can reserve a seat on the bus you'd like to use.

I'm not too sure about the first option, maybe if you contact your hostel they can send you more information on it?

Regarding the JR Pass prices, yes, the seat fee is included in the price of the JR Pass (unreserved and reserved seat fees are all 100% covered by the JR Pass). This means you are guaranteed free travel on all valid JR trains. Reservations are free for JR Pass holders, so if you want to make one you should make sure you visit the JR ticket counter before you board and present your rail pass for a free reservation!

Hope this helps!

Dear Mari,

So from Osaka to Kawaguchiko

I will take JR train from Osaka station to Gotemba Station, then transfer by bus (JR Kanto) to Kawaguchiko station

Means I will fully using JR Pass, correct?

Does Gotemba bus station and JR Kanto bus terminal in Gotemba, located in the same area/building?

Thanks for the JR bus timetable. It helps a lot :) Yes, I will take note on the seat reservation

Thanks!

Hi there!

Actually, I'm not 99% sure the JR Pass will be valid for the Kanto Bus between Gotemba and Kawaguchiko. The and I cannot see the relevant Kanto highway bus listed. That said, the JR Pass may still be usable as this page does not detail all the valid buses - and if your hostel says it's possible I'm inclined to believe them! I recommend you contact the JR East infoline who will be able to make the needed checks for you.

If it is all ok, then the JR kanto bus terminal is just outside JR Gotemba station - you cannot miss it :)
