Uncertainty for most smart choices

Hi. I am planning for my family of 5 : 3 adults , 2 children to travel in Dec 2017.
Im thinking of itinerary as below:
5 days in Tokyo
5 days in Nagano
5 days in Kyoto/Osaka

My questions are:
Do I buy JR pass 7 days for travel Tokyo -Nagano-Osaka or buy 14 days JR pass? Could I use the JR pass for internal travel in Tokyo/Nagano/Osaka or do I buy other travel passes for the internal city travel? Is there a discount for families? Any suggestions on which one we could save more? I have been reading but I get confused

Hi Rozana,

What will you do after Kyoto/Osaka? This could make a difference depending on what pass works best.

Children 0-5 travel for free and children 6-11 are half price.

Hi Rozana,

So a one way Tokyo - Nagano = ¥ 8,400 and Nagano - Osaka is ¥ 14,590. While not an insignificant of an amount, it is below the cost of a 7 day JR Pass and at this point it would be cheaper to buy normal rail tickets. There's not really a pass that would help you make savings for just this route.

A 7 day JR Pass could be good if you did a bit more travel, for instance a day trip to Hiroshima would give you very good value.
