Hi,

We plan to do a round trip from Tokyo-Hiroshima-Tokyo in December. We will like to check with you the type of JR pass we can buy for our trip.

Our itinerary is as below.

Day 1 Arriving Narita Airport, Tokyo.
Day 2 Tokyo to Hiroshima
Day 4 Hiroshima to Kyoto
Day 6 Kyoto - Kii-Tanabe
Day 9 Kii-Tanabe to Osaka
Day 12 Osaka to Tokyo
Day 16 Depart Tokyo

We are thinking of buying the nationwide JR 14 days pass. Is this the most economic option?

For the last 4 days in Tokyo before we depart, what is the best option for us if we intend to travel around Tokyo?

In Day 6, we are staying at Kawayu hot spring, what is the best travel option for us to get from Tanabe to the hot spring?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

I really recommend using a JR Pass for day 1-6, here you'll make plenty of savings compared to purchasing normal tickets. Looking at this there are two options, buy a 7 day JR Pass for the first 7 days and buy normal tickets for the rest, or buy a 14 day JR Pass and use that for day 1-14.

The price of upgrading from a 7 day JR Pass to a 14 day JR Pass is ¥ 17,280 while the cost of a one way trip Osaka - Tokyo is ¥ 13,940, that means you'd have to do an additional ¥ 3,340 in travel for a 14 day JR Pass to pay off. That is fairly easy to do, so I do think a 14 day JR Pass would be the best option.

There's no rail travel available for travel to Kawayu Onsen, you can use a bus from Tababe, here are the details for that.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
