Travelling with JR 7day Pass around Tokyo and Kyoto

My wife and I will be traveling to Japan in Mid- March We plan to visit family and do some sight seeing in Tokyo for two days and then take a trip to Kyoto for a day trip. We were wondering will the JR 7 day pass allow us to access trains in both Tokyo and Kyoto. In addition we will have only limited time for Kyoto so we were thinking of using the Shinkansen, (Bullet train) to make this trip. Would our JR.7 day pass allow us to use the bullet train as well as regular trains, or is there an additional cost for using the Shinkansen train.

Appreciate your assistance.

Hi there,

The JR Pass includes travel on Shinkansen (bullet) trains, as well as all JR Lines nationwide. You can also make seat reservations free with the JR Pass.

In Tokyo the local JR network is very extensive and you can see most of the city with it. In Kyoto however there are only a limited amount of lines and you will most likely need additional transport.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
