Hi there,

I am wondering if anyone could advise me on travelling from Osaka to Hiroshima and Miyajima Island, then to kyoto and then finally back to Osaka. I am quite confused with the metro and JR rail line. How would I know when to take Metro and when would I take JR?

The following would be my schedule:
Arrive at Osaka - Roam for 2 days.
Travel from Osaka to Hiroshima, and take ferry to Miyajima Island for the night
Travel from Miyajima to Kyoto and roam for a few days.
Travel back to Osaka.

In total I will be travelling about 10 days. But I believe I wouldn't need the JR pass until Day 3 of my trip, since I will be staying in Osaka for two days anyway?

I was also told that it might be more cost effective to buy individual Shinkansen (Bullet train) trips instead of the JR pass. Could anyone help me in terms of the calculating the cost?

Thank you so much!

Hi,
A 7 day JR Pass would not pay off for your plans. But there is the JR Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass which comes out way cheaper than buying individual tickets - those others advising you are not well informed.
You can see regular fares, routes and schedules on Hyperdia.

In Osaka you can take JR trains such as on the Loop Line. Non-JR trains and city subways are not covered. If you do a search on Hyperdia, non-JR transport shows up in purple.
Miyajima can be seen easily in a day. Aside from the Itsukushima Shrine with the giant "floating" torii, the Daishoin Temple is also a must-see place. There are several other pagodas and temples, and climbing Mt. Misen offers a fantastic view over the island and whole area. If you have time, just a bit past Miyajima is Iwakuni with its iconic historical bridge and mountaintop castle.

Good luck.
