traveling from Haneda to Kyoto

Hi, my family of 4 arrives Haneda airport at 5.30am on 29th March. We need to get to Kyoto on the same day with our JR pass. I saw that in your previous post this is the way to go:

First take the Tokyo monorail to Hamamatsucho, here transfer to the Yamamote line to Tokyo station (only 6 minutes away). At Tokyo you can board the Shinkansen directly to Kyoto station!

1) May I know how long this trip will take?
2) I see that the JR centre doesn't open until 7.45am so we can't activate our pass. does that mean we can't start our travel until then? or is there a bus to get us to tokyo station first and we can activate our JR pass there so we could catch an earlier train?

Thanks
Vic

Hi Vic,

.1) The full route takes around 171 Minutes.

2.) Well spotted, this does mean that you can't activate the JR Pass before that time. You can however use local transport to travel to Tokyo station and activate the JR Pass there. It does mean that you'll have to pay for a local ticket Haneda - Tokyo (¥ 650).

Hope this helps,
Daniel

we will also be travelling from Kyoto to Hiroshima and then Hiroshima back to Tokyo. Questions:
1) can we book all our train tickets at the activation counter? it's peak season i heard (in fact we are having a lot of troubles with accommodation because of the travel season) Is there a chance we can't get seats to our destinations? we do have a green pass and i heard that gives us a better chance of finding seats, is that true? what will our options be if we can't get train tickets on the date we want?
2) Hiroshima to tokyo on JR pass, how do we do it? I see that we can't travel on Nozomi lines. what will our travel time be like? I'm considering flying but that' means another 1300 Aus dollars.
Thanks

Hi again!

1.) Yes, you can make all the reservations you want when you exchange the JR Pass. I recommend bringing a printed list with dates/times/trains you want to travel on, so the JR Staff can book them easily for you.

2.) From Tokyo or Kyoto - Hiroshima using the JR Pass, use the Hikari Shinkansen from Tokyo/Kyoto to Shin-Osaka, at Shin-Osaka transfer to the Sakura Shinkansen bound for Hiroshima. The full route is covered.

Hope this helps too!
