I'll be going to Hiroshima, Takayama and Osaka over a 5 day period in April.
Is there one pass that would provide travel on the inter-city shinkansen, within Horishima and travel from Osaka to Itami airport? If so what type of pass would you recommend?

Yes, there's definitely a pass you can use. I recommend using a 7 day JR Pass for travel to Hiroshima, Takayama and Osaka. You'll make great savings compared to purchasing normal rail tickets and the pass would cover all your trips.

You can use your JR Pass on the bus Meipuru-pu (maple leaf) that goes around Hiroshima as well as the train and ferry to Miyajima. I agree the 7 day pass. They are such a saving.
