Dear Daniel-san,

I am travelling with my family to Japan next week and we planned following itinerary:

Tokyo to Osaka (visiting Himeji, Kyoto, Kobe from Osaka one day trip)
Osaka to Matsue (but I have an advise that it is better to take train from Himeji to Matsue ?!)
Matsue to Nagoya
Nagoya to Yokohama
Yokohama to Narita Airport

I bought JR Pass for 14 days, but the last day from Yokohama to Narita Airport is not covered as it will reach the 15th day.

My questions are:

1) Is there any local bus or train that is covered by the pass in other cities out Tokyo?
2) I know that are some connections to go from Osaka to Matsue and from Matsue to Nagoya. Are those trains covered by JR Pass ?

Thanks for the advice.

Regards,
Hiromi

Hello Hiromi,

Very nice trip! When in Matsue, I recommend visiting the Adachi Museam of Art for sure! The close by Izumo Taisha and Matsue castle are also not to be missed.

1.) The JR Pass covers local lines throughout Tokyo and Japan but it depends on the city how much you can use them to travel around. For instance in Osaka you can use the JR to see nearly all of the city, while in Kyoto only the west and south are accessible by JR. We have a handy map here which you can use in order to get a sense of lines covered.

2.) Yes, the JR Pass covers all these routes. There is an hourly train going from Okayama to Matsue, so coming from Himeji would be faster but its not that big of a difference compared to Osaka.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
