Travel between Kyoto, Koyosan, Osaka, and Tokyo

On an upcoming trip, I am planning on spending several days in Kyoto, staying one night in Osaka, one night in a temple in Koyasan, and then traveling to Tokyo for a few days.

Here is a rough itinerary:
Day 06-Train from Kyoto to Osaka. Hotel near Namba Station
Day 07-Train from Osaka to Koyasan. Stay in Temple
Day 08-Train from Koyasan to Osaka to Tokyo

I will have a JR Pass and a Koyasan World Heritage Ticket for the travel to Koyasan and return.

Can anyone provide me with specific details about what would be the easiest and least expensive way to travel through Osaka both:
1. from Kyoto to my hotel near Namba Station?
- and - 2. on my return trip when I will want to transfer between the Nankai Koya Line (Shin-Imamiya or Namba Station) to the Tokaido Shinkansen Line (Shin-Osaka Station)?

Thank you,

Hello there,

Using the JR Pass Kyoto station to JR-Namba, have a look at this route.

From Shin-Imamiya, take a local trains to Shin-Osaka station. There you can get on the Shinkansen. A one way fare is ¥ 220 and there is one transfer at Osaka station. See this route.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hello Daniel,

Thank you for researching this for me (and for the links)!

I understand the connections for the Kyoto station to JR-Namba route.

However, for the second route (from Shin-Imamiya to Shin-Osaka) do I need to pay the ¥ 220 if I have the JR Pass?
Also, do I just get on the trains and show my pass or do I need to book any of the trains?

Best regards,

Hi Rebircs,

The route Shin-Imamiya to Shin-Osaka is covered (as long as you travel on JR lines).

Local trains don't have seat reservations, showing your JR Pass is enough. I do recommend making reservations for Shinkansen and limit express trains.

Kind regards,
Daniel
