Hi! me and my brother will travel to Japan for 9 days. should we get the 7 days JR pass? i understand that there are certain trains (maybe within tokyo and kyoto) that we cannot use the pass. what kind of pass should we purchase on top of jr pass in order for us to get around kyoto and tokyo? When should we activate our JR pass? Here's our itinerary:

day 1: arrived at Narita ---> Tokyo (stay overnight in Tokyo)
day 2: Tokyo ---> Kyoto
day 3: Kyoto --->Osaka then back to Kyoto
day 5: Kyoto --->Nara--->Tokyo
day 6: Tokyo
day 7:Tokyo
day 8: Tokyo
day 9: Tokyo ---> Narita airport

This will be our first time in japan. Hope to get some answers here.Thank you for all the inputs provided in here! 😀

Hi there,

A 7 day JR Pass would be great for your trip. I recommend using it from day 1-7 to get the best out of your JR Pass.

The JR Pass also covers local JR lines in Tokyo and Osaka, which are enough to see most of both cities. In Kyoto there are JR lines in the south and west side of the city but other transport will be required for the centre and west/north areas. A 500yen bus ticket that's valid for a full day is a very good way to travel around Kyoto, or renting a bicycle is recommended too.

Hope this helps,
