Hi! I was planning to travel from Tokyo to Sapporo, and have these questions in regards to my travel:

  1. Is my planned route, using Hyperdia, covered fully by 7 day JR Pass such that I do not have to pay additional fees
  2. Do I need to reserve any seats

TOKYO(Departure Track No. 23) - Shinkansen Hayabusa 1 [198 min]
SHIN-AOMORI (Arrival track no. 12) - Limited Express Super Hakucho 1 [125 min]
HAKODATE - Limited Express Super Hokuto 7
SAPPORO (JR) (Arrival track no. 2)

I am unfamiliar with the use of hyperdia, and would greatly appreciate any help I can get. Thank you so much in advance.

Hi there,

This entire route is covered by the JR pass, including the superfast Hayabusa train between Tokyo - Aomori. All together it's a pretty long trip but worth making if you enjoy traveling by train.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you so much for the reply! Would I need to reserve seats on any of the shinkansens?

It's good that you are asking that! The Hayabusa only has reserved seats. So get your tickets in advance. You may as well reserve the whole trip to be secure of seating and it is free with the JR Pass in any event.

Hi,
The total time it would take, with a good connection, would be about 9½ hours on the train. It can be done in a day, but only if you leave by 1:20 PM from Tokyo. If you plan to leave any later than that, then making it to Sapporo on the same day is simply not possible. There are many good places along the way - why not stop somewhere and see a few of them? It would break up the tedium and expand your itinerary more.

Best of luck.
