Hello! I'd like to ask regarding my case, we will be in Japan from March 25-April 2. We will be staying in Tokyo from March 25 to 29, then Osaka from March 29-April 2. So in my case, flying in to Narita airport then planning to take a train to Tokyo where we will spend a few days then travel by train to Osaka then from Osaka, we plan to do day trips in Kobe, Nara and Kyoto. I am confused if we will purchase the 7day JR pass. So, my questions are:

  1. Will it be worth it to purchase the JR pass? Will we be able to travel within tokyo using JR pass only and maximize it's benefit of being an unlimited pass? Does it cover Narita airport going to Tokyo? Then from Tokyo, will we be able to Travel to Osaka by using only JR line?

  2. So once we are in Osaka, we plan to do daytrips to Kobe, Nara, Kyoto.. Will it benefit us if we purchase the pass? WIll it be cheaper than to purchase individual tickets going to these places?

  3. So our return flight to our home country will be from Osaka, Will JR pass cover bullet train going to Kansai Airport?

  4. If in the case you do not recommend purchasing a JR pass, then what other passes do you recommend for us to buy or better to purchase individual tickets?

THANK YOU!

Hi,
If only going one way, a JR Pass would not pay off for you. You would need to add more itinerary to make it worthwhile. Taking at least 2 day trip to places near Tokyo like Nikko, Izu, Karuizawa, or Kusatsu would do it, or from the Kansai area a day trip to see HIroshima and Miyajima would worrk also.

If you did:
1) You can use the pass within Tokyo on the Yamanote Line, which goes to several popular tourist areas. It may not go to all the places you want however, but subway tickets are not expensive. You could also use the pass on the Narita Express from the airport into Tokyo, however there is also the 1000 yen bus if you wanted to use the Pass more in Kansai. You can easily travel by bullet train from Tokyo to Osaka in about 3 hours.

2) You can use the Pass here too to go between the cities, although the fares are not that much.
3) There is no bullet train to the airport. But you can take the Haruka Ltd Express train from Osaka or Kyoto.

4)In that case, some regional passes might save you some money. In Tokyo if you want to use a subway, you might consider a 2 or 3 day subway pass. Both Kyoto and Nara have a 500 yen bus day pass, although for Nara you could spend most of your time seeing the Todaiji Great Buddha and other sights in Nara Park. If you want to see day trips near Tokyo, there is the Tokyo Wide Pass. If you want to see Himeji with Japan's best castle, then a one day Kansai Area Pass can help. And also to get around and go to KIX you might consider a Icoca & Haruka discount ticket

Good luck.
