My husband and I are travelling to Japan on March 28th. We will be in Japan for 8 days. Our plan is to purchase a JR Pass. Flying into Narita, then train to Tokyo. We plan to spend a few days in Tokyo then take the train to Osaka. From Osaka, our plan is to do day trips to Kyoto with our pass.

My questions are:

(1) Is it worthwhile for us to buy a JR Pass? (3) Is it unlimited use? (4) Does the JR Pass allow us on all the trains or only specific trains? (4) Does the JR Pass allow us on the bullet train from Tokyo to Osaka? And what train and where to catch? (5) Where in Osaka would be most convenient for us to find accomodations if we want to be close to the station? (6) Does the JR Pass go to the Osaka Kansai Airport?

Thank you so much for your help.

Hi Vella,

A 7 day JR Pass is worth considering if you include a return Tokyo - Kyoto/Osaka. It looks like that you will go one way and then fly out of Osaka, in this case it is cheaper to buy normal tickets.

A JR Pass does include unlimited use within its validity period and also covers travel to Kansai Airport.

I would recommend staying near Osaka station (Umeda) or near Namba. Both are great area's and are worth visiting.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you for your quick response. I have another question: what line will take us from Narita International Airport to Tokyo with our JR Pass. And where would be a convenient place for us to stay in Tokyo that is close to the trains? Thank you again,

Hi again,

You can use the Narita Express directly between most major stations in Tokyo and Narita Airport.

Basically anywhere around the Yamanote line is a good place. The Yamanote line is a circle line that stops at most major stations in Tokyo. If you want direct Shinkansen access to Kyoto/Osaka, then staying around Tokyo station or Shinagawa station is recommended.

Hope this helps too :)

Thank you so very much again for your helpful information. I hope you don't mind if I ask another question:

With our JR Pass, could you please let me know how to get to Osaka from Tokyo. Such as what train do we take and what line?

You can take any Hikari Shinkansen train on the Tokaido Shinkansen line between Tokyo station and Shin-Osaka station. From Shin-Osaka, local trains run to Osaka station and elsewhere in the city.

Gosh, please forgive me as I have so many questions.

We have an early morning flight from our Osaka hotel, Hotel Keihan Kyobashi Grande to Kansai International Airport. Please tell me how to get to Kansai International Airport with our JR Pass.

Thank you again for your help.

Hi,
You can see here for an example.

Good luck.

We are staying in a Osaka Hotel right above the Kyobashi and Keihan station apparently. I checked the route schedule and it shows 45 mins to travel to Kyoto from Kyobashi stn to Osaka Inner Loop then the JR Special Rapid Service. But is there a much quicker way to get us to Kyoto with our JR Pass?

Hi,
I'm not sure what you're looking at, but the fastest way would be to take the Haruka train, as you can see in the examples above. You go to Tennoji and change trains for the Haruka. Depending on your timing, it might be quicker to take a rapid train down there, which is about 20 minutes longer. Either way, it will be about 50-70 minutes to get to the airport.

Daniel-son, hopping onto vellab's question above on how to get to Osaka from Tokyo and your reply to it, would those local trains you mention also be JR Pass?
