Hello,

I am planning my trip to Japan and am a bit perplexed with the Tokyo to Kawaguchigo transportation.

Most of the information I read stated that the JR Pass can be used to Otsuki station and then we'd have to purchase a ticket for the Fujikyu Railway to reach Kawaguchigo. This seems to be the only way to get to Kawaguchigo stated by most resources.

When I checked Hyperdia, there seems to be an alternative. This is to leave Tokyo via JR Chuo/Chuo Line Rapid Service which reaches Tachikawa station. Then, switch to Ltd. Exp Narita Express and that will go straight to Kawaguchigo. Is this route common? Has anyone ever try it? Also, this route would be covered by JR Rail Pass all the way, right?

Hello there,

There are indeed a very limited amount of Narita Express trains going to Kawaguchiko in summer.

However it's not the train type but "who owns the rail tracks" which determines whether the JR Pass is valid. The part from Otsuki to Kawaguchiko is owned by the Fujikyu railway and and the JR Pass is not valid for this part. There are also other JR services going directly to Kawaguchiko (such as the Holiday Express), these too require an additional fee. You can however use the JR Pass to board the Narita Express and you can pay the remaining fee at Kawaguchiko.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you so much! Is there a way to find out the remaining fee that I would have to pay at Kawaguchiko?
