Tokyo to Fukuoka in 15 days with kids

Hi,
In July we will travel with 2 kids (8 and 4 years) for the first time to Japan. We don't want to be too ambitious traveling with 2 kids (not too many hotel changes) and our itinary will look something like this:

day 1: arrival Narita --> Tokyo
day 2-4: Tokyo
day 5: travel Tokyo --> Kyoto
day 6-10: Kyoto (with day trips to Nara and Osaka)
day 11: travel Kyoto --> Himeiji
day 12: travel Himeiji --> Hiroshima
day 13: Hiroshima and daytrip Miyajima
day 14: travel to Fukuoka (Hakato)
day 15: departure airport Fukuoka

My questions:
- Is it useful to purchase a JR Rail Pass (7 or 14 days)? - Any advice on the itinary? - Is it possible to fit in somewhere a (day-)trip to see something from the countryside (maybe Hakone..)?

Thanks in advance!!
(Thanks already for this nice forum, with lots of useful information!)

Hello there,

I looked into the route that you plan to travel to see what would work best and it seems hard to match a JR Pass to it. Therefor I'd suggest buying normal tickets for this trip.

If you want to visit Hakone, then I'd plan it in between Tokyo - Kyoto, is would make for an easy stopover. An other nice day trip to make from Kyoto is Hikone. It's an old traditional castle town with much of the older buildings intact, somehow it is also not very touristy.

Hope this helps and enjoy Japan!
Daniel

Hi,
Given your schedule and one-way travel, as said a JR Pass wouldn't pay off. Some regional passes can save you some money though. For Tokyo, look into a subway day pass or Keisei/1-2 day pass:

For Kansai, Himeji, or maybe even to cover HIroshima, there is the JR Kansai Area Pass or JR Kansai Wide Area Pass, or JR Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass which might save you some money.

For a day trip to Hiroshima/Miyajima, it is possible if you start very early - you can cover the best places in Hiroshima City (Peace Park/Museum, castle, Shukkeien Garden) and spend about ¾ of a day to see MIyajima. Along the way you might also want to see Iwakuni with its iconic bridge and mountaintop castle.

For Fukuoka, don't miss the Nanzoin Temple which is one of Japan's finest yet almost totally unknown to the outside world and completely FREE! You can also get a great collection of sightseeing spots and 1 day itinerary here and some previews here.

If you want to see Hakone, then you should also read the following:

Good luck!
