Hello. I made the following schedule for my trip to Japan:

Day 1: Narita-Tokyo
Day 2: Stay in Tokyo
Day 3: Tokyo-Takayama
Day 4: Takayama-Osaka
Day 5: Osaka-Nara-Osaka
Day 6: Osaka-Kusatsu
Day 7: Kusatsu-Kyoto-Kusatsu
Day 8: Kusatsu-Kyoto-Kusatsu
Day 9: Kusatsu-Tokyo
Day 10: Stay in Tokyo
Day 11: Stay in Tokyo
Day 12: Tokyo-Narita

My question are:

1) Can I do all this trips with my JR PASS?
2) Is it convenient to stay close to Kusatsu Station to go to Kyoto and the go back for the hotel?

Regards,

Hello there,

That's a nice plan! The JR Pass will cover all rail travel in your itinerary and you could make great savings with a 7 day JR Pass by using it from day 3-9.

2.) Travel to Kusatsu is quite close trip to Kyoto (only 21 minutes by local train), So you could stay there without adding a ton of travel time when visiting Kyoto.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Since you're already heading in the direction of Kusatsu, seeing Hikone Castle would also be very worthwhile. It's one of the few original castles still standing - no reconstruction.
