Hi!
i am thinking to go to Japan with my son 10 y.o. (1 adult, 1 child).
I would like to ask - is it nesassary to buy JR Pass or not if I plan :

  • trip around 13-15 days (30 Dec 2016 - - 14 Jan 2017)

  • 4 days in Tokyo

  • flight from Haneda to New Chitose, then go to Sapporo for 3-4days
  • 4-5 days in Tomamu Ski Resort
  • flight from New Chitose to Haneda airport
  • 3-4 days in Tokyo

Also I would like to visit Koryu-ji in Hakodate , but I don/t know how to include it in trip - it is far from Sapporo and New Chitose. Maybe better to fly to Hakodate, then go to Sapporo, Tomamu and then come back to Hakodate....

Thank you!
Elena

Hello Elena,

I would stick with normal train tickets here. A JR Pass would have been great if you used rail travel to Hokkaido but there is not a lot of rail travel left after flighting.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Daniel-san! Thank you very much for the answer!!

Is it possible to buy these tickets online? I saw just one web site - Hyperdia -but I did not find an option for booking tickets.

With best regards,
Elena

Hi Daniel-san!

Yes, it is helps a lot!

If i will buy all tickets by internet - it will possible to take all tickets at one station? - for example at new Chitose airport?

And about routes which are not included to internet booking - where can I buy tickets for them ? - at the stations before departure of the train?

Thank you!!

Elena

I have looked this site and finally our itinerary will something like this -

-New Chitose-Sapporo (few days in Sapporo)

-Sapporo-Tomamu (4-5 days in Tomamu)

-Tomamu---Minami-Chitose---Hakodate (few days in Hakodate)

-Hakodate---New Chitose

All is looking as around 350 usd with reserved seats))

Hi Elena,

Yes, you can collect the tickets from any of the biggest stations. Normal train tickets can be purchased at any station.

I am not sure if a JR Hokkaido pass would match your itinerary in amount of days but it may be worth looking into for travel to Hakodate and back to New Chitose.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you very much for the answer, Daniel!

I also thinking about to buy 14-day pass, then go with it to Hakodate, then to Tomamu , then Sapporo, then Hakodate and Tokyo. Also I think i can use it for trip to Kyoto during our stay in Tokyo?

Just few questions-
1) Tokyo-Hakodate - is it Shinkansen?
2) rail way is going throw Fukushima ( as it shown at the map). What is about radiation?

Thank you very much!
Elena

Hi again!

1.) Yes, Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate is by Shinkansen.

2.) There is absolutely no need to worry about radiation, the Shinkansen line does not come close to the effected area. There are millions of people living there without problems :)

The JR Pass would cover all of this travel and you could also add Kyoto, though is would be quite a long trip coming from Hokkaido.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Yes, making a stop somewhere is not a bad idea. Sendai or Tokyo are easy stop overs. Or you could even visit Nikko.
