Hello,

This will be my first time in Japan and I'd like some advice on whether getting the JR pass would make sense for three adults on this itinerary:

Narita to Shinjuku, Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko 12 Apr (we fly in to NRT around 8AM)
Kawaguchiko to Osaka 13 Apr
Osaka (we'll make Osaka as our homebased) 14 Apr
Osaka to Kyoto 15 Apr
Osaka to Nara 16 Apr
Osaka to Shinjuku 17 Apr
Stay in Tokyo for the rest of our trip
Shinjuku to Narita 21 Apr

Our total trip is 10 days. Does it makes sense to buy the 7 days JR pass? Also, I'm still debating whether its easier to travel to Kawaguchiko or Hakone with the JR pass. Looking forward to your advice! :)

Hi there,

Yes, I do recommend using a 7 day JR Pass for travel from day 12 to day 18. The price of a 7 day JR Pass is about the same as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Osaka, from there any additional travel is basically what you would save, or better yet, the part that you get for free.

As for Kawaguchiko or Hakone, I have a detailed write up for you here. In short, Hakone would be a much easier option, as travel from there to Osaka is much faster than from Kawaguchiko.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
