Hi I'm going to Tokyo and staying 3 nights, then hakone for 2 nights, then Kyoto 4 nights before back to Tokyo and flight out on the same day. Ive been reading as much as I can about train passes and which is the best, but am totally confused by all the options and local trains etc. can someone please advise if it's good to just get the JR pass or which pass invest for different legs of the journey? And how to change trains and get tickets? I would really appreciate any input... arigato gozaimas!

Hello there,

A 7 day JR Pass is about the same price as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto using the Shinkansen. If you do more travel with it, then you can start making savings. Hakone is directly on the route from Tokyo - Kyoto but the JR Pass does not covert travel within the Hakone region. If you where to make a day trip or two from Kyoto or use the JR Pass to travel from Hakone - Kyoto - Tokyo and then use the JR Pass for something, then it could be an interesting option.

Here is how to reserve train tickets. Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks so much Daniel! So Shinkansen from Tokyo to hakone to Kyoto and back will be approx the same cost as if I were to buy individual tickets? Was thinking of Disneyland haha and hijimei in Kyoto.. I understand To travel in Hakone I need a local pass, but from Tokyo to hakone and then to Kyoto is the JR ok? Thanks again so much, really appreciate it!

Hi Sarah,

The JR Pass would work very well if you add Himeji to your itinerary.

As for travel to Hakone, the JR Pass can be used from Tokyo - Odawara station. Odawara is the Shinkansen station for Hakone. From there you can use local transport.

The train to DisneyLand is also covered by the JR Pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
