Hello,

Haneda airport>>Tokyo (2 nights)>>Hakone (1 nights)>>Kyoto (1 ngihts)>>Osaka (4 nights)>>Kansai Airport. So our journey is one way ticket for the transportation. Could you please help us the info about how to reach Hakone from Tokyo and Kyoto from Hakone?
Do we need to buy JR pass for 7 days? can we use it winthin Osaka?
Thanks

Hi there!

The easiest way would be to use the Shinkansen from Tokyo -> Odawara and use local tra(i)nsport from there into Hakone. To travel to Kyoto from Hakone simply return to Odawara and hop on the Shinkansen to Kyoto.

I would recommend buying normal tickets for your travel as a JR Pass would not pay of for this particular route. However it is valid for local travel around Osaka and Tokyo.

Dear Daniel-san,

Thanks for your recommendation. Can I ask something more?
- is the Shinkanshen from Tokyo (Shinijuku) to Odawara included in JR pass or we have to pay seperately? - and if we come back Tokyo on same day (means Hakone is just for daytime travel) then the next day we move from Tokyo to Kyoto, the JR pass still useful? We cannot buy the JR pass in Japan so we need your help to decide should buy or not buy.
Many thanks.

Hello again,

Yes you can use the JR from Tokyo to Hakone (Odawara station) without extra charge, however travel within Hakone is not covered. For just a one way ticket Tokyo - Kyoto and a visit to Odawara I still think that buying normal tickets would be the best way. However you are getting closer to the point where a JR Pass would pay off.

Dear Danile -san,

Sorry again :), to sum up, the JR pass cover local travel inside Osaka and Tokyo, not valid from Odawara to Hakone and inside Hakone? From Tokyo to Kyoto it is valid but not valid for local travel inside Kyoto? from Kyoto to Osaka (Namba) is the JR still valid?
Could you please reconfirm the validity of JR pass once again so I can give the decision.

Many thanks Daniel.

Hi again!

Yes that's pretty much correct! Odawara is the base station for Hakone and from there you can use local transport into Hakone.

The JR Pass is also valid to a limited extend in Kyoto however for the most part you'll be using the Metro and Buses to travel around the city.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
