questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

Hi, my friends and I are travelling late November to Japan for 12 days and our incoming and outgoing flights are both from Narita airport.

We would like to know what the best value for money is for our itinerary. We were originally going to get the 7 day pass for the first leg of the trip (Tokyo-Hakone-Kyoto-Nara), as well as the Hakone Free Pass and the last week in Tokyo buy regular tickets everyday. However, now I'm unsure as to whether it would work out cheaper for us to buy regular train tickets from Hakone-Kyoto and then using the 7 day JR pass in Tokyo.

Day 1: Arrive at Narita and go straight to Hakone (staying 2 nights)
Day 3: Hakone to Kyoto (staying 3 nights)
Day 7: Kyoto to Nara (1 night)
Day 8: Nara-Tokyo (remaining for 5 nights)
Day 12: Tokyo-Narita airport

Can anybody please recommend the cheapest options for us? Thank you :)

Hello Hannah,

I checked your itinerary and must say that with the current planning it would be better to buy normal tickets. A 7 day JR Pass would work really well if you could travel from Narita - Hakone - Kyoto - Tokyo within 7 days. However now this is over a period of 8 days. Possibly you could look at returning late in the evening on day 7 to Tokyo and use the JR Pass. Otherwise buy normal tickets as you travel.

Hope this helps,
