questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

to buy or not to buy jr pass

To buy or not to buy JR pass

Like many other people on this forum... I am confused as to whether or not it is worth it to buy....

The places my husband and I are planning on visiting

Tokyo- (Shibuya, Shinjuku, Akibukhara, etc... all the tourist sites)
Osaka- (Kyoto, maybe Kobe, maybe Hiroshima etc... all these are maybes as it is not planned yet)
Then we leave from Kyoto airport to Seoul
Its all just one way

We will be in Japan for about 10 days...

I know the rule of thumb is if you are traveling from Tokyo to Kyoto then back from Kyoto to Tokyo then it is worth it.
while we are in Tokyo, we planned on just paying for the fares as we go since the JR Pass is only sold in increments of 7 days at a time...

Please advise.

Hello Tina,

It is hard to say exactly without knowing your final itinerary.

A 7 day JR Pass would certainly be worth it if you visit Hiroshima, at the same time it would be better to buy normal tickets if you just travel one way between Tokyo - Kyoto and stay locally in each place.

I can give you a definite answer once you have your finished itinerary.

Hope this helps,

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your reply.

I don't think we will be going to Hiroshima. It seems little tight to do one day. Our stay is in Osaka... though I know a one day trip is possible.. its just a little rushed.

Thank You,
