We will be arriving in Osaka airport in the evening and the next day will be going for a walk in Kumono Kodo walk for 5-7 days. We also want to visit Koya San for a couple of days. My research shows that it is advisable to start the walk from Tanabe. This whole sector will take about 9-10 days. After that our plan is to spend most of the time around Kyoto and Takawama/Kanazawa area and also Kiso Valley region. On our way back we would like to spend 3-4 days in and around Tokyo. My question is can we do the whole trip with Japan Rail pass for 21 days or we can combine this with Kansai Pass for the first leg of our trip. Our past experience was that Japan Rail Pass can not be used to reach from Osaka to Koya San. could you pls advise what would be the best way to plan this trip with the help of Japan Rail Pass or the cominations of JRP and Kansai Pass.

Hi there,

Travel within the Kansai area is not very expencive by itself and its generally best to simply buy normal tickets.

You could consider using a JR Pass for travel to Kanazawa, Takayama and Tokyo before returning to Kansai but its important to look at ticket prices here as well. We have a useful fare calculator at www.jrpass.com/compare that you can use to see how much you can save using a JR Pass (or that its better to buy normal tickets.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you Daniel for your prompt response to my query. I haven't made my intention clear in my previous post that is we are catching international flight from Narita. Therefore to travel around Tokyo and in Tokyo should we be using JRP. And to travel around Takayama Kanazawa Kiso Valley etc would Kanai Pass would be sufficient. Also can we buy Kansai Pass in Japan unlike JRP. Or if avoid buying JRP can we cover our trip of three weeks with regional rail passes. Thank you in advance for your advice.

Hi there,

Do you mean Kansai Pass? This does not include travel Kanazawa/Takayama etc. Be sure to check the coverage of the pass you'd like to buy.
