Hi,
I intent to travel from Tokyo to Hokkaido, the Alpine route and back to Tokyo , kindly advise will I be able to use the JR Pass. I would like to buy a 14 day pass. Besides these can it be used to travel in Hokkaido using the JR train. Pls advise what are the trains and buses can I use with this pass. Do you think 2 weeks will be enough for this trip?

Hi there,

You can use the JR to travel to Hokkaido but keep in mind that is a rather long trip from Tokyo to Hokkaido, even with the super fast Shinkansen.

I also see that you want to visit the Alpine Route. This is certainly possible, however keep in mind that this is in the other direction than Hokkaido and this will add even more travel.

While I would like to advise you more, the itinerary is still too open. Please let me know what kind of cities you would like to visit, how long you want to be in Hokkaido and what time of year you would like to visit Japan.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thank you so much for your reply. Since it's too long a journey to go to Hokkaido and then to the Alpine Route I'll forego the Hokkaido since I've already visited Sapporo 3 years ago. What do think if I'll visit the Alpine Route and continue to Fukuoka. Will it be too far? I intend to spend 2 weeks in May 16 for this trip from Tokyo. Should I buy a 7 days or 14 days JR pass for the whole trip. It will be great if you could advise me on the itinnery that I should take.

Greatly appreciate your help.

Patricia

Hi Patricia,

I think going to Kyushu makes a lot more sense and you can basically just travel on from the Alpine route down south, with two weeks on your hands, I think you'll have plenty of time to make the trip and enjoy everywhere you may decide to stop.

I recommend using a 14 day JR Pass, since you'll be traveling so much and the flexibly of taking any train you want for a 14 day period is just too good to pass up.

Hope this helps too!
Daniel
