I will have a 14 day JR Pass. If travelling from Takayama to Matsumoto, would it be best to travel by train or bus? If by train - what train do I book and is it included in the JR Pass? I know there is a Nohi Bus service that operates between the two.

Hi there,

It is a bit of a ride but I would go with this route. Taking a ltd. express train from Takayama to Nagoya and from Nagoya - Matsumoto. You'll travel a lot in the Japanese alps and the route is very scenic. This is fully covered by the JR Pass. (See route 2 and 5).

You could also use the bus but I have no experience using this route, so I can't really comment on it.
