Takayama in April 2016

We are travelling to Takayama for the Spring Festival. We're concerned because we've heard that you can't reserve tickets from outside of Japan and wonder if the train into Takayama on 14th April out again on 16 April will be fully booked.
What is the likelihood of that happening? Are there any options to book tickets from Australia?

Hi there,

Attending the festival itself is not a problem, there is not a limited place and there are festivities everywhere. The real issue is getting accommodations in time. Takayama sells out months in advance, this means that you'll have to stay somewhere outside of Takayama. However once you have that sorted, you'll have no problem enjoying the festival.

Thank you, we have our accommodation. I was worried that as we are coming from overseas and can't reserve train tickets until we get to Japan, we wouldn't be able to get to Takayama due to the number of people travelling there.
Or we'd get stuck and not be able to get to Osaka on the 16th when most people will leave.

You can always take a non reserved seat if seats are sold out. Just try to reserve tickets the moment that you arrive in Japan, this way you secure seating together.
