Hello,

We have planed our two weeks in Japan and hesitate about the need to buy a JR Pass.

We arrive in Osaka on the 25th of March from where we head directly to Kyoto where we stay 4 nights. We will spend one day in Arashiyama.

If we buy one, we thought we could activate our 7 days JR Pass on sunday 29th from Kyoto as our itinerary goes as follow:

29.03: Kyoto to Uno to Naoshima and night in Uno
30.03: Ferry Uno-Teshima-Uno
31.03: train from Uno to Okayama, stop to visit the garden, train to Kanazawa (coastal way)
1.04: Kanazawa - Shirakawa-go (of possible) - night in Takayama
2.04: night in Takayama
3.04: Takayama to Magome, night in Tsumago
4.04: Tsumago to Tokyo

And then we would stay 6 days in Tokyo.

Do you think if is interesting to take the JR Pass ?

Thanks in advance,

Aurélie

Hello Aurélie,

Let's have a look at normal JR tickets and find out :)

Kyoto - Uno ¥ 8,810
Uno - Okayama ¥ 580
Okayama - Kanazawa ¥ 11,790
Takayama - Magome ¥ 5,700 (Nakatsugawa station)
Magome - Tokyo ¥ 11,640

For a total of ¥ 38,520 or ¥ 9,410 in savings, as the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 29,100. I was not expecting this much in savings when I first read your route but the JR Pass would make for a great choice. It also serves as a single ticket for all your travel - making for convenient travel.

Additionally, if for some reason you would not travel to Shirakawa-go, then you could use the train from Kanazawa to Takayama as well.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks a lot Daniel!

This will help us to plan our trip! Now we need to try and ind out how long all these trips will last :)

Do you know if it is possible to take the ferry to naoshima and teshima with the pass ?

Also, do you think we should consider to take the 14day pass in order to use it in Tokyo as well as we are staying in ikebukero and then go the haneda airport or will it be cheaper to use regular metro ticket during our six days there ?

Thanks for your help,

Aurelie

Hello Aurélie,

Glad to hear it :D

The Ferry is not covered by the JR Pass but it's not a long trip and the fare only 290 yen (~2,50 euro).

Although you are close to making savings with a 14 day JR Pass, I think going for the 7 day JR Pass would be the most economical option and you could buy normal tickets in Tokyo or buy day passes, for instance for the metro if you plan on doing a lot of sightseeing. Normally local travel in Tokyo is not very expancive.

Hope this helps too!
Daniel
