Below are my rough itinerary, this is my first time in Japan and I would like to cover the usual Must-See places of Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo and their surroundings :

13 Nov 2014 - reached Osaka (KIX), staying either at Kyoto, near JR Rokujizo) or Osaka, Shijonawate (I am still undecided on which is the better area to stay, would be good if you could impart some local opinion?).

13 Nov 2014 - 17 Nov 2014 (5 days): will be exploring Osaka & Kyoto and surrounding areas such as Nara etc, I hope to be able to cover Takayama as well but it seems to be quite a long journey.

18 Nov 2014 : check out & travel to Tokyo

18 Nov 2014 - 22 Nov 2014 (5 days): staying in Tokyo and plan to visit Tokyo and surrounding areas such as Hakone.

22 Nov 2014 - going home from Narita airport.

Kindly advise if based on the above, would a 7 days JR pass be advisable?
I have read through some other questions posed and noted that for most of the time JR pass would only be advisable if the route from Osaka - Tokyo are return ie 2-way.
Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

I wonder how you got both Rokujizo and Shijonawate in there. Both are not areas most people stay in. Personally I would go to Rokujizo as it offers a bit more to see and do close-by, think of Uji and Fushimi Inari. You could also take the train to from there to Kyoto station for easy access to other places or ride the Keihan into Kyoto city.

As for the JR Pass, it all comes down to your visit to Takayama. The JR Pass would be worth it if you include a visit there. Otherwise it would be better to just buy tickets as you go.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks for your kind reply, Daniel.

Reason I ended up at less popular place because my reservation at one of the hostel at central kyoto was cancelled due to technical glitch.
With less than one month away from my travel date & limited budget, I don't have much choice.

You have been most helpful! Thanks again for clearing my doubts.

Regards
Anne
