My son (17 yrs) and I will be traveling to Japan for the first time. We have rented an apartment in Tokyo close to Harajuku and Shinjuku stations. Our plane arrives in Narita at 6,45 am on Sunday 24 August.

We will be staying in Tokio for ten days/nights and leaving in the afternoon of 3 September.

We want to explore Tokyo but would also like to make day-trips to places like Kyoto, Nara, Nagoya, or Osaka but return each night to sleep in Tokyo. We plan to get a 7-day JR Pass.

Does our plan make sense to you? Are such day trips possible and practical? Also, when should I initiate the validity of our ticket? Perhaps on 27 Aug so we can use it when we depart to get fro the apt to Narita. Please advise. Thank you.

Hi Roberto,

In a way it makes sense, in a way in does not.
Let me explain: Nara, Kyoto and Osaka are all close and making a day trip to each from Tokyo adds a lot of extra travel time. It would make more sense to stay a night or two in this area. However if you at it with the JR Pass in mind. Then it makes great sense to use a JR Pass for the above travel. Basically one trip Tokyo - Kyoto already plays for the JR Pass, so you would make very good savings over normal tickets when you travel using a JR Pass.

My advise would be to cover visiting Kyoto, Nagoya, Osaka and Nara with the JR Pass and then try to do as much local travel as well, such as to Narita Airport.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
