Hi there,
Just wondering if I am able to purchase a hokkaido rail pass from inside hokkaido such as at hakodate airport or something similar and roughly how much it would be for a 5 day pass, or is it just easier to purchase an exchange order first before entering the country.
Many thanks, Matt.
Purchasing Hokkaido Rail Pass
Hi,
You can buy it at the Chitose Airport but not the Hakodate Airport. You could get it at Hakodate Station, however. The complete list is here. The 5 day pass is 22,000 yen. The Hokkaido passes are comparatively expensive - you should make sure you are getting you money's worth before buying it.
You can see regular fares, routes and schedules on Hyperdia.
Unlike a lot of other passes, there is no higher charge buying it in Japan. Depending on the exchange rate fluctuations, it could even cost you slightly more or slightly less - but probably very little and there is no way to accurately predict which way. If you're going to some isolated areas, renting a car is another option if you're up for it.
Good luck.
Thanks, sorry for late reply I forgot about this and the price is worth it. I was just wondering if it was the same price if bought as an exchange order or if bought at the Hakodate station. I am aware of renting a car but we cannot drive legally yet so this is not really an option.
Thanks for the information however :)
