Hi , we will be travelling from Tokyo to Hakone/FujiQ for 2 nights and then directly to Kyoto for 5 nights before returning to Tokyo. My thoughts are to buy the HakoneFuji pass which includes return trip between Shinjuku and Odawara, but does it make sense to return to Shinjuku and then take a train to Kyoto or should we take directly from Odawara to Kyoto and in which case, we will not be using the paid Odawara-Shinjuku leg. Alternatively, I can purchase ticket from Shinjuku to Odawara and Hakone pass but will then have to pay for transport from Hakone to fujiQ. What is the recommendation? Given my itinerary, if I opt to purchase the 7 day pass to cover the trip from Odawara to Kyoto and from Kyoto to Tokyo, is this cost efficient? Thanks

Hi Elim,

This is indeed a bit difficult. If you made the visit Tokyo - Hakone - Kyoto - Tokyo within 7 days, then I would say use the JR Pass for travel from Tokyo - Odawara. However with 8 days of travel it becomes a little harder to plan.

After double checking everything, I think the best way to go about this would be to buy normal tickets for the entire trip, or buy a Hakone Free Pass + Normal tickets if you plan to explore Hakone a good bit. Normal tickets from Odawara - Kyoto and Kyoto - Tokyo are just below the cost of a 7 day JR Pass. However if you could cover more travel with the JR Pass, then it would quickly be easy to make savings.

Additionally you could look at direct buses between Fuji-Q and Tokyo, which generally are cheaper than travel by rail.

Hope this helps!
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

I will be travelling during the Christmas/ new year period, please advise if I should buy my Hakone-Fuji pass, ticket from Odawara to Kyoto (25 Dec) and Kyoto to Tokyo (29Dec) in advance? Of so, can I get them online? Thanks again,

Elim

Hi again!

I would buy the tickets once you are at Odawara station. Both to Kyoto and the return ticket to Tokyo. The 29th especially can be busy, so it's better to have the ticket reserved in advance.

It can only be done at a station in Japan.

Enjoy Japan!
Daniel
