Hi!

How do I travel from Osaka to Tokyo? Kinda confused what train to take.

I'll be in Japan for from November 15 - 25 entering via KIX exiting via Tokyo. We're planning to visit Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, Hiroshima, Yokohama and Tokyo. Do you think it's best to avail the 7 day pass?

Thank you!

Hi there,

To travel from Osaka - Tokyo, first make your way to Shin-Osaka station from anywhere in Osaka city. From there you can use the Shinkansen (bullet trains) directly to Kyoto, Kobe, Hiroshima, Yokohama and Tokyo! Given the amount of travel, especially with Hiroshima and Tokyo added in. A 7 day JR Pass will allow you to make very good savings over purchasing normal tickets then traveling.

Hope this helps and happy travels!

Thank you, Daniel!

Since we're staying for 10 days when's the best time to activate the JR Pass? Initial itenirary - stay in osaka vist kyoto 1st 3-4 days then nara, kobe and hiroshima then tour osaka... Do you think we should tour osaka first? Thank you in advance!!!

Hi again!

The key to using the JR Pass is to cover as much travel with it as possible. That does not mean you have to use it everyday but I would recommend covering at least Osaka - Hiroshima and travel to Tokyo with it. It does make sense to start in Osaka since you arrive there. Travel from Osaka - Tokyo takes 3-4hours. You don't have to reserve seats but it can certainly be nice to have seats secure in advance.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi,
It really is up to your plans and itinerary. If you can see Hiroshima and travel to Tokyo within 7 days, you would get great savings using a 7 day pass. The best route would be to avoid backtracking as much as possible, and put as much long distance travel within 7 days as you can.
But since you already plan to see Tokyo, you can largely skip Osaka during the day. Use the time for Kyoto/Nara, and at night you can enjoy many good nightspots in Osaka like Dotonbori and the Umeda Sky Bldg. Kyoto Station at night is worth exploring as well. Kobe has some good lookouts at night like Mt. Rokko.

You could do Hiroshima in a day if you start early in the morning - see the Peace Park/Museum, Shukkeien Garden and castle, but the real jewel of the region is Miyajima and is someplace you should not miss. You can see most of the best in ¾ of a day. For Yokohama, be sure to see the Chinatown as well as the Sankeien Garden.

Best of luck.
