Hi there - we're trying to work out the best way to use a 14 day rail pass in early April 2017. Can you please let us know:
1. Can we get to Osaka to Akita in one day on the JRpass, and how many times would we have to change trains?

  1. Can we get from Akita to Asahikawa in one day on the JRpass, and how many times would be have to change trains?

  2. Can we get from Sapporo to Nikko in one day on the JRpass and how many times would be have to change trains?

Thanks very much - your answers will really help us decide what train pass to get and how to work out a travel itinerary.

Hi there,

1.) Yes, this is certainly possible. It is a long trip though. First you have to travel to Shin-Osaka station from where you can get on the Shinkansen to Tokyo, at Tokyo you can transfer to the Komachi Shinkansen bound for Akita.

2.) Yes, this is also a long trip. Best way would be to take the Shinkansen from Akita - Morioka, transfer to the Hayabusa to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto station, there transfer to a limited express train bound for Sapporo and from Sapporo use one more limited express train to Asahikawa.

3.) Yes, though again this is a very long trip. There would be 2 transfers. One at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto station and one at Utsunomiya.

The JR Pass fully covers these trains and you would make amazing savings compared to purchasing normal tickets.

You can check www.hyperdia.com for travel times and detailed routes.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
