We fly into Osaka (ITAMI) in late October. We plan to stay in Kyoto for a week. We are planning a day trip back to Osaka on a Saturday. We would also like to get around in Kyoto throughout the week.

We would also like to spend a day or two to travel up to Hiroshima & visit a castle in Hyogo along the way.

Then on the second week we may go to Fiji plus other places yet to determine.

Is the JR pass going to help with our travels? Would it be a combination of the bullet train plus regular trains?
How do we best get around within Kyoto?

Thanks for your assistance.

Hi Dennis,

The effectiveness of a JR Pass will very much depend on what you'll do in your 2nd week. The Pass can be absolutely great for exploring Japan and will save you good money when you plan on using the Shinkansen to travel between different cities. Both the Shinkansen and regular JR networks are included.

For travel around Kyoto I would suggest renting a bicycle. The city is flat and you see way more that way. Otherwise, the bus is a good alternative, you can buy 500yen bus pass from the driver. A normal bus ride is 230yen per ride, so easy savings.

You can use our JR Farecalculator to find out how much you can save using a Japan Rail Pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
